What the Future Holds
Glacier Bay National Park is experiencing a glacial retreat as we speak. These processes led to the formation of the bay to begin with and as time progresses, these processes will continue. Knowing what impacts have occurred because of the glacial retreat the future of glacier bay isn’t hard to predict. As the glaciers retreat further and further new land that used to be dominated by the icy glaciers will become exposed. Primary succession will “begin to take root” and a vast array of organisms will slowly claim the land.
Also in the future of Glacier Bay National Park some species such as the humpback whale might cease to exist in the regions of the park. Unless an effort is made to preserve the endangered life in the park, the ecosystem in Glacier Bay will be greatly affected and loss of species will be inevitable. Predation will continue to occur as expected. As long as none of the individual populations experience any significant fluctuations the necessary balance of the ecosystem will be preserved.
Humans continue to impact the wildlife in the park throughout their daily activities. As you have seen humans also play a key role in the carbon cycle. The destruction of plants and the burning of fossil fuels greatly influence the carbon levels throughout the park by releasing the bound carbon into the atmosphere. These harmful conditions will continue to develop unless humans become cognizant of the consequences of their actions.
